What are the advantages of feeding frozen mice and frozen rats over live rodents?

Here are the top reason to choose frozen over live.

  1. Safety of your pet. We have all witnessed the nasty bites that mice and rats can inflict on your reptiles and birds of prey. Rodents will even feed on a reptile if the reptile is not hungry and the owner leaves the rodent in the enclosure. With frozen mice and frozen rats, you do not have this problem. If you still continue to supplement with live prey, do not leave with your pet more than a few hours.
  2. By using frozen mice and frozen rats, most diseases and parasites that live prey might have are killed during the freezing process.
  3. Frozen mice and frozen rats can be kept for months and are always available in a few minutes when your pet is ready to feed.

Having trouble getting your pet to accept frozen? Try holding with tongs and slightly moving at feeding time. Most predators are attracted to movement and this can greatly increase your pets stimulation towards the new frozen option. Slow and methodical movements are better than fast and jerky movements. Also, do not hold up against the edge of the pets container. Any quick strike that misses, may damage your pets nose.

Remember that pythons as well as some boas and all pit vipers, sense the heat of their prey’s body while hunting. Frozen mice and frozen rats should be thawed first before feeding to your pet. They can be put out on a counter for a few hours and they will quickly thaw out. The more hair on the prey, the longer this thawing time will take. They can then be easily warmed up by placing it them under a low wattage heat lamp, or by popping it a zip lock baggy and floating it in some very warm water. NEVER microwave the prey.
